Computer aided design (CAD) is used to throughout the design process from initial inception to the visual presentation of the idea and finally the manufacturing of the product or design.

Once 3D models are designed the data can be transferred to 3D printers which print a physical model by building up the material layer by layer. These 3D prototype models can be very detailed and can show the fit, form and function of most products or product assemblies.
